Rocky’s Hot Chicken Shack

We were surviving off Yelp reviews and Thrillist articles to determine where we were eating. Being in the south, we felt like we needed to eat fried delicious southern comfort food because why not?

So we drove to Rocky’s Hot Chicken Shack in Asheville. It’s not surrounded by much and it’s about 20 minutes from downtown Asheville. There’s a giant parking lot and if that’s full, there’s a small parking lot just on the other side of the building. I believe you can only park there when those businesses are closed.

When you walk in, you stand in line and order your food then find a place to sit. There are menus immediately when you walk in (and a terrifying statue of a man with a chicken head). As you get closer to the counter, look to the right and you can see their spicy options. They give you fair warning and can make anything mild to spicy. But when I’m talking about spicy, I’m not talking about only 5 levels. I’m talking about up to 10 levels for everyone.

We chose to sit at the bar so that we could bypass the line. Our bartender was one of the most adorable ladies I have ever met. I personally ordered a plate of chicken legs with a side of mashed potatoes and Mac and cheese.

All chicken options come out on a slice of white bread with a pickle slice. I never made it to the bread because I was too stuffed on everything else.

We also ordered a huge side of onion rings.

Once our food arrived, we stopped talking and spent the remainder of the evening in pure silence because the food was so good. It was one of those situations where you are so excited about the food that you don’t want to stop eating.

Finally, after getting to the point where we were stuffed and had some huge food babies, it was time to head back to our hotel and settle in for the evening.
